![]() In around 563BC, the Roman Empire (Spanish - Imperio Romano. Gorenian - Ius`r`? ?`ob`? Rou?vxà. Transliterated: Imperesh deosel Romaanuya) discovered Alcúdia but left before starting a battle. They settled in and spoke the language of Gorenian, which was picked up from other empires in the SPQR empire. The language of Gorenian is still spoken in areas near the High Street, Hotetur Lagamonte and Bellevue; only about 2,000-4,000 speak it now. The old town has an ancient Medieval- from XIV Century fort wall. The walls are not Roman, but there are remains of a Roman town just outside the town walls, in front of the Church of St. Jaume, called Pollentia. There is also a small Roman theatre. The walled town is beautiful, much of it has now been pedestrianized and there are plenty of squares with places to eat and drink. North of the wall is a bull ring, although most fights are mock fights. Further north and west are many wonderful coves ideal for sunbathing or snorkeling. |
