Mallorca Towns

Andratx is one of the best known resorts of Mallorca. Situated in the southwest area of the island, it occupies the last rocks of the "Serra de Tramuntana". The district covers approximately 82.55 square kilometres, distributed around 5 town centres: Andratx, Port d'Andratx, S'Arraco, Sant Elm and Camp de Mar.

The village of Andratx in inland, located in the southwest of Mallorca, was founded in the 17th century and features a remarkable weir church which was apparently a stronghold against pirates and invaders in the past. The village itself has a unique historical atmosphere with its cobbled streets and the remains of the old wall which once protected the inhabitants of Andratx from attack by pirates.  The oldest part of the town is formed by the Pantaleu and Pou Amunt districts. The higher section of the town consists of twisting and constricted stepped roads whereas the lower part of town appears to be based more on a grid design.  Na Gaiana's Tower, said to be used to protect from pirate raids, can be see at Colom st. Son Mas castle which was built in the 19th century now houses the town hall. It has a 15th century tower inside called the Sagrament Tower. Santa Maria d'Antratx church, even after years of improvement still retains the appearance of an 18th century temple.

The district of Andratx is very diverse, with wonderful contrasts between mountain and sea.  This is where the Serra de Traumtana come to an end and this mainly mountainous district has pretty coves and beautiful beaches scattered around its coast line. There are also lovely wide valleys to be enjoyed in Andratx and S'Arraco or walks in the surrounding hills.  It is approximately 25 kilometers from Palma and is the perfect place to relax with its many residential areas and hotels.

On Wednesdays in Andratx (except on bank holidays) it is market day when you can buy fruits, vegetables, souvenirs, clothes, and so much more.  This is one of my favourite markets, it has a wonderful atmosphere and takes place in the centre of the town, with the stalls leading off into the small streets around, enchanting.

Andratx also has its fair share of Fairs: The first Sunday of May the "Fira Agricola i Ramadera" (farming and agriculture fair) takes place. Local festivities: 29th June: Sant Pere (Andratx), 16th July: Verge del Carme (Port d'Andratx), August: Festa di Moros y Cristianos (Sant Elm), 28th August: Sant Agusti (S'Arraco), 8th September: Verge de la Trapa (S'Arraco).

Perhaps the reason that Andratx is particularly interesting is because it is very exclusive and relatively unknown to the package holiday market, or is it because of the landscape, the climate, the peace and the improvement in the communications of the area.  It has, over the past decade become one of the most attractive places for foreigners seeking a place to buy a second home where they can enjoy wonderful holidays.
