The typical 'garb' of the islands was the inspiration, along with the hippie movement, of Adlib fashion which began in 1971 and is still a major lure for tourists to the Balearic Islands.

Adlib is a very artisan style of fashion and uses natural fabrics along with traditional embroidery and laces.  Regardless of the constant changes in the world of fashion Adlib continues to be 'in style'.  It was in fact created in 1971 bt a Yugoslavian princess, Smilja Mihailovitch, who was inspired by the typical  Pitiusan clothing but with a lot of direct influence of the day and the hippie era.

Foreign visitors to Ibiza, from the 1960's onward, turned the island into a European refuge for the hippie movement.  Because of the casualness and freedom that the hippies exuded in their style of dress Mihailovitch decided that it was the time to liberate women's fashion from the norms that had been dictating them for many years. This was a real turning point and the Adlib fashion was created so that women could become more aware of their own bodies and dress to suit their lifestyles.

The first fashion show of Adlib actually took place in the same year as it was created, and took place in the streets of Ibiza.  Later when the Ibiza Fashion Board was founded, they took charge of the promoting and organising of fashion shows along with channelling sales abroad.  The Board is presided over by the Island Council and is made up of around thirty designers.  The Board has in fact been promoting Adlib fashion for years in a variety of ways, from economic aid, sponsorships at fairs and with the organisation of competitions.

The concept behind Adlib is recognised in its slogan 'Dress however you want to, but elegantly' and is a major fact in its survival to the present day.

The fashion world gathers on the island of Ibiza for the Ibiza and Formentera Fashion Week and, of course, for the presentation of Adlib's season's fashion consisting mainly of whites with a detail or two in bright, contrasting colours along with wonderfully, light and airy volumes using natural fabrics, tulles and embroideries, accentuating movement and freedom in design.
