The Artá Caves are surrounded by mountains that tower over the sea. They are located on the coast, in the municipality of Capdepera, in the Cap Vermell. They were formed when the mountain massif, where they are located, fractured. It is more than likely that the caves have been visited since times gone by and it is very likely that the island’s primitive inhabitants knew of them, as did the various populations that later inhabited the island although perhaps visited for other reasons than to admire the natural pure architecture of these stalagmites and stalactites. On entering the towering entrance there is access to the chamber known as the Vestible or Entrance Hall. In this chamber with its high arched roof there are many thousands of stalactites with colossal shapes and exceptional proportions hanging down. There are also tall, graceful stalagmites rising up from the ground vaguely resembling human forms, mysterious, still, striking visions, indifferent to the gazes of awe from those that visit. The Sala de les Columnes (Column Room) is astounding in its pure natural architecture. In the middle of the Sala de la Reina de les Columnas (Queen of the Columns Room) there is an incredible column 25 metres tall which reaches up to the ceiling. One of the largest rooms, called Inferno (Hell), shows where rocks and formations have come together to shape a fantastical mural.
