 The Cuevas dels Hams caves are located on the eastern side of Mallorca in Porto Cristo. They were discovered by Mallorcan speleologist Pere Caldentey on the 2nd of March 1905 and were opened to the public five years later.They have very particular branching formations, and the guided tour will take you through up to 14 different rooms. The entrance is called Primeras Visiones (First Views) and the next room is Cementerio de las Hadas (Fairy Cemetery). The deepest part, the lake called Mar de Venecia (Venice Sea) is 30 metres deep, and its acoustics are amazing. The natural beauty of the coves is enhanced by the electrical lighting installed by Llorenç Caldentey, the son of the man who discovered them. Another spectacular room is the one Caldentey named Paraíso Perdido (Paradise Lost) after Milton’s book, as well as the Sueño del Ángel (Angel’s Dream), where the stalactites are shaped like fishhooks (hams in Catalan, hence the name Coves dels Hams – Fishhook Caves). Inside, the show entitled Magical Mozart, a tribute to this composer, is offered every day. On the tour – which is conducted in small groups accompanied by guides-interpreters – guests can see the “inhabitants” of the coves, whitish, blind prehistoric crustaceans that have survived through time. Just to show you something of how it is down there 'on the lake' I have found this video, just to give you an idea, having said that I truly believe there is nothing like the experience itself, rather than watching a video. This is the part where they have a boat out on the lake and they are playing the music.
