Travelling west from the airport is pretty straightforward for most of the route there once, if you are driving yourself, you have adjusted to driving on the wrong side of the road, remember the roundabouts go the other way, this is where I often drew a blank, especially after being on the motorway for a while. The roads have been improved over the past five years quite substantially with the motorway now going almost as far as Paquera and the signs on the roads being much more comprehensive. Paguera is often unkindly referred to as "Little Germany" by many of the English speaking residents on the south coast. In all fairness, the resort is very popular with the German tourists who make up the vast majority of visitors here throughout the year. Paguera has a choice of three beaches, the Playa Palmira, Playa Tora and Playa La Romana all of which are joined by a fairly new pedestrian promenade. In the summer months the beaches are very busy but are always kept very clean by the local council. At the back of the promenade there is a long shopping street which runs the complete length of the resort with lots of shops, bars and restaurants to entice you. There are a variety of interesting little shops that are well worth a visit and unlike most seaside resorts on the island there is a lot of diversity in what they are selling. There is also a great variety in the restaurants and bars many of which will have their menus on display in German, as the majority of tourists in this resort are Germans, but they undoubltedly also have their menus in English and most waiters/waitresses speak both English and German. I love this resort, and would say that although it is different to its neighbouring resorts of Magaluf and Palmanova, in that it is a lot more tranquil, Paguera is still not the resort for those seeking peace and quiet it is lively in its own way. If you are looking for peace and quiet then further along the south coast, is the nearby resort Camp de Mar which may be more suitable. Most of the hotels in the town are found towards the back on the resort in quite a hilly area. Whilst this affords most visitors a good view back over the town, it does make Paguera particularly unsuitable for those with mobility problems, or families with young children in pushchairs. One problem that is unfortunate for such a popular resort is the parking facilities. They are quite difficult to find and you could find yourself parking quite a distance from the beach. When you come into Paquera it is a complicated one way system with access only one way along the main street, so depending upon which end of Paquera you come in you will either be directed up and behind the hotels and main street or through the main street where you cannot park. Be prepared to walk until you get used to where you can and cannot drive or park in this resort . It is well worth a visit, for the beaches and for the shops, restaurants and bars regardless of the walking, one of my own favourites. All things considered Paguera is a busy, lively resort that always has something going on. Somewhat of a German "oasis" amongst the other British dominated south coast resorts which makes a pleasant change. |
